![]() Operational training and conversion ģ0 Operational Training Unit Wellingtons in September 1943 Following completion of training at a graduation ceremony aircrew were presented with their aircrew brevet (the correct term is flying badge) and either handed their sergeant's stripes or commissioned as officers. No matter where they originated in Britain or the Commonwealth they could be shipped to the next available training course in any of those nations where pilots were trained to fly at "Elementary Flying Training Schools" and the other aircrew trades attended appropriate trade schools such as "Air Navigation Schools" or "Bombing and Gunnery Schools". On completion of basic military training aircrew candidates would wear a white flash on the front of their service issue "side caps" denoting their "aircrew under training" status. Multiple training schools also operated in the United States where bomber pilots, navigators and bomb aimers were trained. Under a parallel agreement, the Joint Air Training Scheme in South Africa and Southern Rhodesia operated training bases for aircrew. BCATP remains as one of the single largest aviation training programs in history and was responsible for training nearly half the pilots, navigators, bomb aimers, air gunners, wireless operators and flight engineers who served with the Royal Air Force (RAF), Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm (FAA), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF), Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) during the war. It was a massive, joint military aircrew training program created by the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, during the Second World War. The risk of Luftwaffe attack on training bases in Great Britain coupled with the urgent need for larger numbers of well trained aircrew than the pre-war systems could produce brought about the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan ( BCATP), often referred to as simply "The Plan". Therefore, a total of 75,446 airmen (60 percent of operational airmen) were killed, wounded or taken prisoner. Bomber Command aircrews suffered a high casualty rate: of a total of 125,000 aircrew, 57,205 were killed (a 46 percent death rate), a further 8,403 were wounded in action and 9,838 became prisoners of war. In total 364,514 operational sorties were flown and 8,325 aircraft lost in action. (For more details, see "Aircrew Ages" section below.) ![]() Most aircrew were aged between 19 and 25, although some were as young as 16, and at least one was in his sixties. Of these, 32 were officially non-British units: 15 RCAF squadrons, eight RAAF squadrons, four Polish squadrons, two French squadrons, two RNZAF/"New Zealand" squadrons, and one Czechoslovakian squadron. Likewise many RAF personnel served in Article XV squadrons.Ī total of 126 squadrons served with Bomber Command. While it was intended that RCAF, RAAF, and RNZAF personnel would serve only with their respective " Article XV squadrons", in practice many were posted to units of the RAF or other air forces. Under Article XV of the 1939 Air Training Agreement, squadrons belonging officially to the RCAF, RAAF, and RNZAF were formed, equipped and financed by the RAF, for service in Europe. While the majority of Bomber Command personnel were members of the RAF, many belonged to other air forces – especially the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) and Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF). The crews were men from the United Kingdom, other Commonwealth countries, and occupied Europe, especially Poland, France, Czechoslovakia and Norway, as well as other foreign volunteers. However, GPMDP is also open-source, with its source code available on Github. So he's not obligated to keep updating it, and his interests may change. The app and your use of it are completely free, because it is a student project.īecause the app is a student project, its future is unclear: Samuel Attard began developing GPMDP as a teenager, in college, as a freely available engineering project, rather than a product he intended to make money off of. Three, there is no attempt to make a financial transaction. We know more about him than we do about the people who make Google Play Music, itself. He prominently displays his full name, physical appearance, place of residence, multiple methods of contact, and even where he goes to college. Two, the app creator, Samuel Attard is not anonymous. If you try to access your Google account from within GPMDP, you actually get redirected to an external web browser window. One, the app is mostly acting as a front end for the Play Music website, so it can't intercept your log-in info. ![]() But we know that we can make an exception for GPMDP for a few reasons. You may be leery about using your Google account password in the app: It's healthy to be skeptical when a non-official app asks for your password. The unofficial Desktop Player app is the only way for Play Music to replicate a function that Spotify users have enjoyed for years. You need a Chromecast, Nexus Player, or other officially supported device. How is this different from just using Google's mobile app to cast to a local device? Surprisingly, the official app doesn't let you cast to your computer, even if you have Play Music loaded in a Google Chrome browser tab. So your compatible smartwatch can use the app, too. You get music controls, playlists, search, and the ability to play specific songs, plus the app is compatible with Android Wear. Making it a permanent resident of the UI can help alleviate some anxiety about accidentally removing a song from your library, and it's also a better reminder that your trash is automatically emptied after 60 days.Ī free remote player mobile app for Android: As its name implies, Remote for GPMDP is a free Android app that interacts directly with the Desktop Player, over your local Wi-Fi connection. The Trash section exists in the web version of Google Play, but you can't see it unless there's something in it. ![]() You can set the Player app to open when you start your computer, enable voice control, use a mini player widget, link the app to a Last.FM account, create keyboard shortcuts for a variety of common actions, and even try out experimental support of 5.1 surround sound. The additional features are welcome and sensible: While the visual design of GPMDP is nearly identical to the web version, you'll notice a few additional items when you click on the hamburger menu in the upper left corner, chiefly "Desktop Settings" and "Trash." Clicking on Desktop Settings opens up a whole new layer of functions and interaction. Its advantages come in what it can add to the experience, rather than attempting to alter what's already working. It doesn't try to reinvent the wheel: Play Music doesn't have a bad interface, so why fix what isn't broken? For the most part, Google Play Music Desktop Player (GPMDP) seeks to mirror the look and feel of the in-browser experience, for maximum familiarity. Have Play Music fans been missing out by not having a Spotify-like desktop experience? Let's investigate. ![]() Generally speaking, Google's mobile services come from a kaleidoscope of individual apps, but us lowly Windows and Mac users get corralled into a web browser tab when we want to load up Gmail, Drive, Photos, Maps, and so on. Although Google Play Music (GPM) competes directly against Spotify and other streaming services, it actually doesn't have its own desktop app. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() With the rise of Ransomware-as-a-Service and the evolving tactics of ransomware groups, companies must remain vigilant.
